Mainframe News Out There

Feb 26, 2020

Once a month we like to pick blog articles from other sources that we feel are interesting enough to talk about on the Planet Mainframe blog. Here are this month’s picks:

The Mainframe Is a Modern Platform

An interesting article by Planet Mainframe friend and IBM Gold Consultant for Db2 Craig Mullins on the DBTA blog: The Mainframe Is a Modern Platform. Mullins explains how the mainframe is not out dated, with the z15 being a cutting edge collection of powerful hardware – things that most of us know. But also talks about mainframe modernization, a subject near and dear to the hearts of many of us at Planet Mainframe. Definitely worth a read.

Sysplex For Resilience: More Than Just Systems

Another fine article by the experts at Longpela Expertise, Sysplex For Resilience: More Than Just Systems. David Stephens tells us about how a recent project with an important client went in a new Sysplex implementation. Pretty detailed stuff. As he says, Sysplex is a terrific solution for adding load balancing and applying robust resilience, but it definitely doesn’t come out of the box! A nice article, worth a read.

Montana Sidelines the Mainframe

Another interesting article from our friend at Dancing Dinosaur: Montana Sidelines the Mainframe. How many times have we read this story? Can a mainframe be replaced by commodity technology? Sure it can! Will the project go as planned? <silence> How will it look 6 months down the road? Well, it’s taking longer; well, it’s costing A LOT more than… Dancing Dinosaur has seen it many times – have a look what he has to say about this latest announcement.

Cleaner and Safer z/OS Code with Zowe

A good in-the-weeds article by Jason Tucker at on the Open Mainframe Project blog: How to Write Cleaner and Safer z/OS Code with Zowe CLI and SonarQube. At Planet Mainframe, we’re pretty excited about the possibilities presented by Zowe – if you are, too, this article is definitely worth a read…
