No Data Left Behind:
The Complete Guide to IMS Database Recovery

June 16, 2026

A DEDB area is corrupt. A full-function database has stopped with RECOVER NEEDED. The batch window opens in a few hours, and the business still needs to run. IMS database recovery is one of the most critical skills in enterprise computing, yet many engineers only learn it under pressure—piecing together log chains, deciphering unfamiliar RECON messages, and hoping the latest image copy is still usable.

This session approaches IMS recovery from two complementary perspectives: an IMS recovery specialist and a Fast Path database engineer. Together, they will walk attendees through the complete IMS recovery process, covering the mechanics of the IMS log chain, DBRC, RECON, image copies, change accumulation, and GENJCL generation.

The session will also dive into a real-world Fast Path DEDB recovery scenario, including area-level recovery, FPSI integrity checking, and bringing a damaged area back online. Attendees will gain practical insight into both the fundamentals and the operational realities of IMS recovery before disaster strikes.
