Every technical field develops its own language, and the mainframe world is no exception. Whether we’re talking about the alphabet soup of multi-letter acronyms or terms that have been part of the platform for decades, mainframe jargon serves as a kind of shorthand among practitioners. If you’ve been around the datacenter for a while, you’ll know that understanding the vocabulary is an important step to understanding the technology itself.

This quiz puts that vocabulary to the test. Some of these terms are part of everyday conversation in the data center, while others may send you digging through the memory banks. How fluent are you in the language of the mainframe?

1. In modern z/OS environments, what does the acronym “SDSF” stand for?”

2. In z/OS, what is a “catalog”?

3. What is a “PARMLIB” member used for?

4.  Which IBM utility is commonly used to sort large datasets?

5. In mainframe terminology, what is a “SYSOUT” dataset?

6. What is the purpose of the IDCAMS utility?

7. What does the term “APF-authorized” indicate?

8. What is a “started task” (STC)?

9. What is the purpose of SMP/E?

10. In mainframe discussions, what is meant by “the four-hour rolling average” (R4HA)?

Question 1 – What does SDSF stand for? Your mainframe jargon test is incorrect. SDSF stands for System Display and Search Facility – the correct answer. SDSF not only displays output on spool, but it displays the system log, started tasks, initiators and more.
