Finding Purpose: Reinventing My Mainframe Career

When people think about making a major career leap after more than two decades in one domain, the immediate reaction is often hesitation. After all, why disrupt a comfortable rhythm when you have spent 22 years building deep expertise, credibility, and success? Yet, nine months ago, I chose to take that exact leap—stepping into a formal role as a Senior Project Manager within Broadcom’s Mainframe Technical Consulting organization. It was a pivotal decision that redefined my professional horizon, proving that reinvention isn’t about starting over from scratch; it is about channeling everything you have built into a dynamic new chapter.

A Journey From Education to Technical Consulting

My journey began more than 22 years ago within the education organizations at CA Technologies, which later became part of Broadcom following the acquisition. During those foundational years, I immersed myself in program and project management tailored around adult learning principles. I found immense fulfillment in creating, scaling, and delivering educational programs designed to empower employees and enable customer success. 

Because many of these initiatives were deployed across global regions, my work took me around the world. Traveling to meet and collaborate with diverse teams across different countries taught me how to bridge cultural differences, establish cross-functional alignment, and build trust across time zones. At the time, I simply viewed these global engagements as rewarding milestones of my education career. In reality, they were quietly laying the groundwork and honing the exact interpersonal toolkit that would fuel my future success in technical consulting.

Stepping out of my established comfort zone into the Mainframe Technical Consulting organization was both exhilarating and intimidating. Mainframe environments underpin the core operations of the world’s largest enterprises—from banking systems to global supply chains—meaning the stakes are exceptionally high. But meaningful professional growth rarely happens inside a comfort zone. Transitioning into this formal Senior Project Manager position allowed me to broaden my technical understanding, gain fresh insight into the consulting business model, and apply my battle-tested project management methodology to an entirely new landscape.

Creating Clarity Amidst Complexity

The most significant evolution came in the form of a vital mindset shift. In program development, daily operational adjustments and immediate tactical fixes are common. In technical consulting project management, however, reactive problem-solving must give way to disciplined, forward-looking orchestration. Success is defined by anticipating project milestones, mapping complex technical dependencies, managing strict budgets, and mitigating risks that could disrupt delivery weeks or months down the line. I quickly realized that world-class project management is not merely about tracking tasks and ticking off checklists. Rather, it’s fundamentally about creating clarity amidst complexity so that every stakeholder, engineer, and customer can execute with confidence.

Early on, I embraced an essential truth: You do not need to possess every single technical answer to lead effectively. In a specialized domain like mainframe technology, true leadership means cultivating comfort with uncertainty, maintaining transparency across all moving parts, and relying on open communication. Rather than pretending to know every nuanced technical detail, I lean into the world-class expertise of our dedicated technical teams, tap into the rich network of relationships I cultivated over two decades, and apply structured project governance to keep our collective goals on target.

Driving Continuous Innovation Through Collaboration

Today, working directly with our enterprise customers on a daily basis brings me an incredible sense of purpose. This role feels tailor-made for this stage of my career. Collaborating closely with clients has given me a front-row perspective on how essential our software and consulting services are in keeping mission-critical global businesses operating seamlessly around the clock.

As I reflect on the last nine months and look toward the future, I see an expansive horizon filled with opportunity. Mainframe modernization and hybrid cloud transformations are accelerating, making our consulting expertise more vital than ever. While every project brings its own unique complexities—some running flawlessly while others demand rigorous course corrections and hard-won lessons—the path ahead is exceptionally bright. 

Navigating this transition reinforced that longevity in a company is a powerful asset. By combining my extensive background in education with the strategic rigor of mainframe technical consulting, I am excited to drive continued innovation, deliver transformative customer outcomes, and help shape the next era of enterprise technology.
