PJ Catalano 2026

Pasquale “PJ” Catalano

IBM Z & LinuxONE Test Architect
IBM Infrastructure, EST&I
Poughkeepsie, New York, USA

IBM Z & LinuxONE Test Architect and Master Inventor, Pasquale “PJ” Catalano, leads a team of over 100 quality assurance engineers at IBM’s test facility in Poughkeepsie, New York. But what has defined his past year isn’t any single role or title. Rather, it’s the relentless, generous, often hilarious presence he brings to every corner of the mainframe community.

Championing the z17

If there’s one story that defines PJ’s 2025, it’s the IBM z17. The platform launched to the strongest start of any IBM mainframe generation in three quarters, and PJ’s fingerprints are on that momentum. Through social content, virtual tours, event appearances, and sheer enthusiasm, he built visible excitement around the platform before and after launch. He unboxed hardware in front of crowds. He brought the machine to life for audiences who had never thought to look twice at enterprise infrastructure.

“He is a great cheerleader for the IBM z17. His contributions at IBM TechXchange, including unboxing a mainframe, attracted a large gathering.” —Nominator

That’s PJ: turning a hardware launch into a moment people want to witness.

Educator, Tour Guide, and Pipeline Builder

In 2025 and early 2026, PJ deepened his commitment to the next generation in tangible ways. He participated in the 2026 IBM Z Educator Experience, delivering an “IBM Z & LinuxONE: 101 Overview” to educators,  and then went further, offering to present directly to their students and follow up with a virtual tour of the IBM Z and LinuxONE Test Facility.

One professor from Wayne State College described how her students, already learning ISPF, SDSF, COBOL, and JCL, were pulled into “a whole new world” by PJ’s energy and humor. “It is very inspiring how PJ takes time out of his busy day to share his world with us,” she wrote.

That pattern repeated across institutions and time zones. Nominators from Japan, Belgium, Romania, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, New Zealand, Italy, the UK, and across the US all described the same experience: PJ showing up, sharing his knowledge freely, and making people feel genuinely welcome in a community that can be hard to enter.

PJ IMF Fun Profile

A Million Impressions, One Comment at a Time

As one of approximately 200 IBM Global Social Influencers, PJ generates over one million impressions per year across LinkedIn, TikTok, and Instagram, where his combined following now exceeds 34,000. But the metric that matters most to PJ isn’t reach, but his response. He replies to every.single.comment. He congratulates new graduates and interns the moment they post about their first roles. He amplifies others’ work. He makes people feel seen.

“He is often among the first to offer congratulations every time a new hire posts about their job on LinkedIn,” one nominator observed. “Immediately, the new hires are ‘part of the club,’ recognized by a well-known IBMer.”

For an IBM Z Student Ambassador who nominated him this year, that visibility carries real weight: “Seeing someone who is both technically excellent and visibly passionate about their work makes a difference. Representation of enthusiasm and authenticity matters.”

The Philosophy Behind the Platform

Behind the memes and mainframe tours, PJ’s approach to community is grounded in something deeper—something you see in the way he shows up for individuals.

Christopher Watson, a nominator from Colombia, credited PJ with inspiring him to complete his Computer Science degree: “He has never hesitated to answer my questions, even when I messaged him out of the blue.” A colleague put it more simply: “I look up to PJ as an inspiration in my own journey. I see him not only as a coworker, but as a mentor.”

“If Mainframe were a university subject,” one nominator wrote, “PJ would be a Full Professor.”

An influential mainframe for three years running, PJ shines. His mission: make the invisible visible, lift others as you go, and make mainframes cool.
