This year, the 2026 Influential Mainframers program saw record-breaking engagement, proving that innovation on the Z platform knows no borders.
The selection process was rigorous. From a massive pool of 155 applications—representing 68 unique nominees—only 26 individuals were selected for the 2026 year’s class.
A Snapshot of Influence
The 2026 cohort represents a fascinating mix of seasoned veterans and fresh perspectives:
- Global Reach: Nominees hailed from 18 countries across 5 continents, highlighting the platform’s critical role in everything from European banking to South American infrastructure.
- The Next Generation: In a testament to the platform’s vitality, 50% of this year’s winners were first-time nominees.
- Closing the Gap: While the industry continues to work toward better representation, 20% of the selected honorees are female leaders—a number we hope to see grow as these influencers mentor the next generation.
- The Elite Tier: Among the honorees, 4 Top Influencers were identified, representing the top 15% of influencers globally—the “North Stars” of the mainframe world, whose impact resonates across public and private organizations.
The World is Powered by Z
The geographical spread of this year’s applicants (as shown in the map below) indicates that the mainframe is not a regional technology. From the tech hubs of North America and Europe to emerging powerhouses in India and Australia, the sun never sets on mainframe innovation.
Why These Numbers Matter
While these statistics represent a successful award cycle, they also represent workforce sustainability. When 50% of your top influencers are new to the list, it means the skills gap bridge is under construction, led by passionate advocates who are redefining what it means to be a mainframer in the 2020s and beyond.
Additionally, whether they are architecting hybrid cloud integrations or mentoring early-career engineers, these 26 individuals are the reason the mainframe remains the most reliable, secure, and innovative platform in the world.
