Four Campuses, One Week: Meet Your Future Mainframe Employees

Principal Consultant @ Team SWAMI, IBM Champion, IBM Gold Consultant Greg DeBo is a Principal Consultant and IBM Gold Consultant at TeamSWAMI, having previously spent 34 years at a large Insurance Company with a focus on Mainframe Data. TeamSWAMI focuses on helping small and midsize clients understand the possibilities that the modern mainframe provides, as well as engaging universities to address the mainframe skills pipeline.

Across the country, organizations are feeling the squeeze of a shrinking mainframe skills pipeline. Last year, I shared how Illinois universities were stepping up to teach mainframe skills and how employers could tap into that pipeline. The story continues, starting September 15!

New Courses, New Momentum

The University of Illinois–Springfield (UIS) proudly relaunched its mainframe courses. The effort has been years in the making, and it’s finally a reality.

UIS makes a natural fit, as Springfield is home to companies like Levi, Ray & Shoup, Horace Mann, and the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology, all of which run mainframes. The campus also sits within driving distance of St. Louis and Bloomington—home to major insurance operations (including the one where I spent most of my career).

This means increased access to specialized training for students and a stronger talent pipeline for employers in the Midwest and beyond.

Mainframe Tour Starts September 15

This fall marks the fourth year of the Illinois Mainframe Tour, co-sponsored by TeamSWAMI. Over one week, employers can meet hundreds of students at four universities already taking mainframe courses – including Assembler. These students are curious, motivated, and hungry for internships.

“Show the next generation that a career in mainframes is a career worth having.”

Here’s the schedule:

Date University City
Monday, Sept 15 Eastern Illinois University Charleston, IL
Tuesday, Sept 16 University of Illinois-Springfield Springfield, IL
Wednesday, Sept 17 Illinois State University (ISU) Normal, IL
Thursday, Sept 18 Northern Illinois University DeKalb, IL

The agenda can vary depending on specific university requests, but all events happen in the early evening to avoid class conflicts. Participating organizations can expect:

  • A keynote, often by young mainframe phenom Lucas Sahn, to spark excitement.
  • Employer introductions: who you are, what skills you need, and what opportunities you offer.
  • “Speed Dating for ZSkills,” where students circulate to meet employers, ask questions, and share resumes.

It’s an efficient opportunity for companies traveling from out of state to get their name in front of the future workforce. It’s equally an invaluable experience for students looking to enter the field.

Mainframe Skills Beyond the Midwest

The skills shortage won’t solve itself. Illinois is proving that partnerships between universities and industry work. Hundreds of students emerge from these programs hungry for internships, apprenticeships, and full-time roles.

“In just one week, employers can meet hundreds of students already taking mainframe courses—including Assembler.”

Whether you’re in New York, Texas, or California, the lesson is the same: the talent pipeline can grow with the right partnerships. The Illinois tour isn’t just a local success story; it’s proof that the next generation of mainframers is ready and eager – if we can meet them and start building interest and relationships early.

Be a Part of the Talent Solution

Plan your visit to Illinois now. Connect with students, build your future pipeline, and show the next generation that a career in mainframes is a career worth having. It’s a chance to connect with eager students, showcase your company, and invest in the future of mainframe talent.
