WLM Performance and Re-evaluating Goals Workshop

May 12 @ 8:00 am - May 16 @ 5:00 pm EDT

This 4 day virtual workshop taught by Peter Enrico (sometimes joined by Scott Chapman) will give you a deeper understanding of WLM functions and abilities. You will learn considerations for re-evaluating goals over time and how to better monitor, tune, and control how WLM manages your workload.

Register to join us May 12 – 16, 2025, for this online workshop. Registration Deadline: April 28, 2025.

A Week of Reviewing Your Own Data

Prior to class, you’ll receive instructions on what data to bring from your own systems. Then, during the workshop, you’ll spend the week conducting a basic system performance Health Check® using your own data. If you haven’t done a Health Check® recently, or if you have lingering performance questions, this is the perfect opportunity for guided instruction, hands-on analysis, and expert feedback from Peter Enrico, a leading zArchitecture performance expert.

You’ll leave this workshop having completed an actual WLM performance analysis. No other z/OS performance seminar, workshop, or conference provides the same level of value and analysis.

This workshop is for you if:

  • You want to evaluate your current WLM Service Definition and goals.
  • You want to ensure your WLM setup is optimal for your environment.
  • You’re an experienced performance analyst seeking deeper insight into WLM.
  • You’re a novice or new to z/OS performance and need a strong foundation.
  • You want expert WLM performance management advice.
  • You want to spend a week learning and improving your own system’s performance.

What You’ll Learn

  • You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of WLM functions and capabilities. Through hands-on analysis of your WLM Service Definition and real system measurements, you’ll learn:
  • When and how to revisit and refine your WLM goals
  • How to monitor, tune, and control WLM to manage workloads effectively
  • How to leverage additional WLM functions for system management and workload balancing
  • This isn’t just about service classes and goals—you’ll explore WLM constructs like enclaves and application environments, and how these can benefit your workloads.

Workshop Overview

  • Understanding how WLM works is the first step in optimizing your environment. This workshop covers:
  • WLM basics and workload management strategies
  • Internal WLM algorithms used to address response time delays and velocity goals
  • How WLM handles CICS, IMS, WebSphere, DB2, SAP R/3, ADABAS, IDMS, and more
  • Advanced use of service classes, goals, and WLM performance controls
