It’s AI month at Planet Mainframe, and for Round Two of our Trivia Challenge, we’re turning to agentic AI. On the mainframe, this emerging technology is moving beyond answering questions and generating code. Agents can interpret goals, reason through multi-step problems, call tools, work with live system data and, within defined guardrails, recommend or safely initiate actions.

On systems responsible for mission-critical workloads, however, autonomous execution comes with some important qualifiers. Permissions, auditability, human oversight and policy controls matter just as much as an agent’s ability to act. Meanwhile, technologies such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP) are giving agents new ways to interact with mainframe applications and operational data.

Take our quiz and test your knowledge of the emerging world of agentic AI on the mainframe!

1. What most clearly distinguishes an AI agent from a conventional generative AI chatbot?

2. What role does the Model Context Protocol (MCP) play in agentic AI?

3. Why are permissions and policy controls particularly important for agentic AI on a mainframe?

4. Which task could typically be handled by a conventional generative AI interaction without agentic tool use or multi-step planning?

5. In IBM’s agentic AI architecture for IBM Z, MCP is intended to help agents interact with which of the following?

6. Which IBM CICS agent is specifically described as working with the topology agent and querying the MCP server for live contextual information?

7. What is the main difference between retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and an AI agent?

8. Rocket Software’s PlanGuard places a policy checkpoint between which two stages?

9. Which type of mainframe information does Rocket Software say EVA can access to provide operational context?

10. What did respondents to BMC’s 2026 Mainframe Survey generally indicate about AI autonomy?
