IBM Reports Infrastructure Revenue Down 7 Percent
IBM took the unusual step of releasing preliminary second-quarter 2026 results ahead of its scheduled earnings announcement after revenue came in below expectations, driven largely by weaker-than-anticipated sales of its z17 mainframe and related software. Infrastructure revenue declined 7 percent during the quarter, despite IBM previously describing the z17 launch as the strongest in the company’s history.
In a letter to investors, IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna attributed the shortfall primarily to an unexpected shift in customer spending during the final weeks of June. According to Krishna, many organizations redirected capital budgets toward servers, storage, and memory to secure AI-related infrastructure before anticipated price increases and supply constraints. Fewer mainframe transactions also affected sales of transaction processing software, while industry-wide cybersecurity concerns and delayed deal closings further impacted results. Krishna acknowledged that IBM “did not adapt and move quickly enough,” resulting in several large deals slipping beyond the quarter.
Despite the disappointing quarter, IBM emphasized that demand for the z17 platform remains strong. Krishna noted that the system is performing at nearly 130 percent program-to-program compared with z16, with customers representing 85 percent of installed MIPS maintaining or increasing capacity. Software revenue grew 5 percent, Red Hat revenue increased 11 percent, and IBM’s Distributed Infrastructure business posted record growth, reflecting continued customer investment in AI and enterprise infrastructure.
