It is exciting to be part of the world of computer performance at the dawn of AI. Many companies are heavily investing in Artificial Intelligence (AI) with only a few crude implementations having materialized thus far. As a performance guy, I can say it is important to exercise temperance and not to buy into all the marketing hype just yet. Why? Because we believe it is best for companies to first invest in Actual Intelligence.
Despite the concerns about changes in various information technology roles due to AI, Z enterprise computer performance is still an extremely viable career for the foreseeable future. To learn more about some pros/cons and how to navigate this shift, view a recent webinar I held in October, z/OS Performance Management in an AI World. Prioritizing Actual Intelligence in your workforce is still a smart, long-term investment and the right path to take.
Like everyone reading this, I am preparing for the oncoming AI revolution that promises to have huge implications for all computer professionals. My colleague Scott Chapman and I have been thinking a great deal about AI and have taken steps to incorporate some level of AI into Pivotor®, our premiere performance reporting service, in a secure and stable way. At EPS, we are working hard to prepare both our current and prospective customers. Our educational webinars are a major example of our mission to foster knowledge transfer. But before we put all our eggs in the AI basket, it is crucial to recognize that cultivating Actual Intelligence is a preventative measure.
Actual Intelligence can outperform AI, and here’s why:
6 Truths About Actual Intelligence
- Actual Intelligence will always be needed to provide a deep contextual understanding of the environment, business objectives, trends and constraints. A contextual understanding is needed to interpret complex performance measurements and make decisions that align with broader company goals.
- Actual Intelligence is needed to perform complex problem-solving, which usually requires intuition, creativity and situational awareness that AI cannot achieve.
- Actual Intelligence allows decisions based on judgment and experience. There are many real-world considerations and constraints that cannot – and should not – be parameterized into AI engines.
- Actual Intelligence comes from real-world experience, which allows analysts to help identify and debug both subtle and complex problems. The ability to adapt to real-world changes is critical.
- Actual Intelligence allows performance analysts to collaborate and share ideas. Humans can learn and benefit as they reach out to their colleagues specializing in other areas.
- Actual Intelligence allows us to understand the broader implications of recommendations and changes. Humans are more adaptive to changes in business and world events. Then, we are able to act depending on what is technically best and optimal for the business.
At EPS, one of our main goals is to help teams invest in their educational expertise while helping them with their z/OS performance. With my 40+ years of experience working in the mainframe sector, I cannot recommend enough that you learn how to benefit from AI but also ensure you do not find yourself out of a career. Keep investing in your own education and the education of your employees so that AI will not disrupt your work when unprepared. Many of the young people reading this may not have the 40-year mainframe career I have had, but there will be some wonderful opportunities to come.
While AI will change the day-to-day z/OS performance management tasks, Actual Intelligence will be more necessary than ever. Again, I suggest tuning into z/OS Performance Management in an AI World. It is a great, thought-provoking watch. We discuss important considerations regarding AI and the workforce for new graduates, seasoned professionals, and companies in general at length. Following this webinar, we had a ton of comments about opinions of AI in this sector. Some are optimistic, some are concerned. It is an important conversation.
While AI is everywhere right now, remember to invest heavily in Actual Intelligence, which is so much more than automated analyses of data patterns. Invest in the strength of your workforce!
