Amanda Hendley’s career is rooted in a combination of leadership and deep curiosity about technology. A graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Management, Amanda spent years in leadership roles within nonprofits and membership organizations in the tech and science industries. Her journey eventually led her to Planet Mainframe, where she now serves as managing editor, helping to spotlight an often-underappreciated technology.

“I’ve always had a high-level understanding of IT, but my formal introduction to mainframes came while working with the Computer Measurement Group (CMG),” Amanda shares. “I realized how vital mainframes are to industries like banking and healthcare, yet they don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Joining Planet Mainframe felt like the perfect opportunity to dive deeper and help amplify their importance.”

A Day in the Life

Amanda’s typical day balances strategy, practicality, and creativity. “Mornings are for emails, meetings with contributors and advertisers, and virtual calls with our European partners,” she explains. “Afternoons are when I focus on editing, planning our editorial calendar, and brainstorming new campaign and content ideas.”

She thrives in a collaborative environment through her connections within the global mainframe community. “The reward is working with people who are so passionate and welcoming. It’s a niche field, but that’s what makes it special.”

Making an Impact

One of Amanda’s proudest achievements at Planet Mainframe has been spearheading the Influential Mainframers program, an initiative recognizing key contributors to the field. “Reading the nominations and bios was inspiring,” Amanda says. “It showed just how impactful these professionals are, and it was a privilege to celebrate their work.”

Her leadership has driven impressive growth for Planet Mainframe, nearly tripling engagement and site visits since she joined. “It’s validating to see our numbers reflect the community we’re building. I love that my role allows me to connect people and ideas.”

Working in a male-dominated field, Amanda considers supporting other women a personal mission. “I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible men and women who’ve bolstered my career. I make it a point to seek out and amplify women’s voices in this industry.”

Beyond the Mainframe

Outside of work, Amanda has a wide range of interests. “I’m a multipotentialite, so I find relaxation in a lot of things—painting, gardening, cooking, golfing, fishing, hiking, boating, you name it,” she says. “Sometimes, I think I don’t know how to unwind! But I enjoy keeping busy with creative and outdoor activities.”

Also a book lover, Amanda recently finished God of the Woods by Liz Moore and Verity by Colleen Hoover. “I prefer audiobooks, which absolutely count as reading,” she adds, “They’re perfect for someone like me who’s always on the move.”

A Vision for the Future

Amanda’s role at Planet Mainframe feeds her natural curiosity and drive to learn. “Mainframes are the backbone of industries that power our world. I love being part of a community that’s dedicated to keeping this technology relevant and evolving.”

Through her leadership, Amanda drives awareness for mainframes and builds a thriving global community that celebrates innovation and connection.

Amanda lives with her son in Georgia, along with two frisky dogs.
