Australian Department of Home Affairs signs IBM mainframe contract

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs is preparing for the June 2025 expiry of its long-standing $924 million mainframe agreement with IBM under its new ‘Future Compute’ strategy. It has signed a $165 million contract with IBM for software licenses, hardware, and maintenance to support its enterprise mainframe and storage services. This contract includes “transition-in activities” as part of the department’s broader effort to modernize its legacy infrastructure.

The ‘Future Compute’ strategy aims to separate IBM’s product and support provisions from managed services, with the department currently seeking a managed services supplier through an active tender launched in January 2024. The new contract was signed via IBM’s whole-of-government arrangement, which now exceeds $1 billion in value.
