Dear Mainframer,

September is a special month for the mainframe community as we celebrate the birthday of COBOL, a programming language that has stood the test of time and continues to power critical systems around the world. To mark this occasion, Planet Mainframe is inviting our community members to share their thoughts, experiences, and insights about COBOL.

We’re looking for article submissions ranging from 500 to 1,500 words. Whether you’re a seasoned COBOL developer or someone who’s new to the language, we’d love to hear your perspective. In addition to full-length articles, we’re also accepting short-form reflections.

You can use one of the following prompts to guide your reflection:

  • “I first heard of COBOL…”
  • “COBOL was explained to me as…”
  • “Compared to other programming languages, COBOL is…”
  • “Something I wish everyone understood about COBOL is…”

We’re excited to announce that our celebration will also feature a special anthology by Derek Britton, Founder and Leader of The Open Mainframe Project’s COBOL Working Group. Your contributions will be showcased alongside this anthology, highlighting COBOL’s enduring legacy and its relevance today.

Please submit your content to editor Penney Berryman, pberryman@planetmainframe.com, by August 30th.

We’re looking forward to your contributions as we honor this iconic programming language. If you have any questions or need further guidance, feel free to reach out to us.

Thank you for being part of our community and for helping us celebrate COBOL’s birthday!

Best regards,

Amanda Hendley
